DBT
Definition
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured, skills-based therapy originally developed for borderline personality disorder and now widely used for emotion regulation across many presentations. DBT teaches four core skill sets: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Clinical Context
Full DBT programs include individual therapy, group skills training, phone coaching, and a therapist consultation team. DBT-informed practice draws on the skills and frame without the full program structure. DBT is well-supported by research for emotion regulation and self-harm reduction.
How This Shows Up in Our Work
Our practice is DBT-informed. We use the skills (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness) where they fit. For full DBT programs, referrals to comprehensive DBT clinics in New York are available.
