Informed Consent
Definition
Informed consent in clinical care is the process by which a person receives clear information about the proposed care (benefits, risks, alternatives, expected course) and agrees to proceed with full understanding. Informed consent is not a single signed form; it is an ongoing conversation.
Clinical Context
In gender affirming care, the informed-consent model contrasts with older mental-health-gatekeeper models. The clinician's role is to ensure the person has the information they need to decide, not to render a verdict on whether the person is allowed to make the decision.
How This Shows Up in Our Work
Our practice operates from an informed-consent posture in all clinical work. Letters of support reflect that posture. The clinical contribution is information and professional judgment, not gatekeeping. The decision is yours.
