Autism Spectrum
Definition
Autism spectrum describes a neurodevelopmental pattern with differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of interest and behavior. The presentation varies widely; the term spectrum reflects the range, not a linear scale of severity.
Clinical Context
Affirming practice frames autism as a neurotype, not a deficit. Many autistic adults are diagnosed late, particularly women, nonbinary people, and people of color whose presentations were missed by older diagnostic norms. AuDHD describes the common overlap of autism and ADHD.
How This Shows Up in Our Work
Autism-affirming therapy in our practice respects sensory needs, communication style, and the cost of years of masking. The work is paced and pressure-aware. Practical strategy (sensory regulation, communication frames, self-advocacy) pairs with deeper work on identity, relationships, and the rewriting of an internal narrative.
