Neurodivergence
Definition
Neurodivergence is a broad category that describes brains that work differently from the neurotypical norm. The category includes autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome, and other neurotypes. Neurodiversity is the principle that this variation is a natural, valuable part of human cognitive diversity.
Clinical Context
Neurodiversity-affirming practice pairs accommodation with strength. The frame avoids the deficit model and avoids forced compliance with neurotypical norms. The clinical task is to help the person work with their actual brain and to help the world meet them where they are.
