WPATH

Definition

WPATH is the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, an international multidisciplinary professional association. WPATH publishes the Standards of Care, currently in version 8 (SOC-8), which provide consensus clinical guidelines for gender affirming care.

Clinical Context

The Standards of Care are guidelines, not law, but most insurance carriers and many medical providers reference them. SOC-8 supports an informed-consent model for hormone therapy and reduces earlier gatekeeping requirements. The standards are reviewed and updated periodically.

How This Shows Up in Our Work

Letter writing in our practice is WPATH-aligned. Documentation reflects SOC-8 language and structure where insurance and surgical teams expect it. The clinical posture is informed-consent and trust, not gatekeeping. Letters affirm capacity for informed consent and support the requested care.
